Dekada Fight Night Fallout

Grey Eagle Resort and Casino was the meeting point for Liberty Multimedia and Dekada Fight Night yet again. The May 26th event delivered big and K1 Kickboxing was yet again a part of Dekada.

Robert Wicherek and Garret South got the K1 action started with Garret putting up an unwavering pace. Body shots, teeps, and a variety of punches were mixed in well en-route to Garret securing a TKO win at 1:17 of round three. Another amateur K1 rules bout followed the opener.

Riley Pequin and Mac Laursen were next on the docket with Mac seeming to connect at a higher rate. Riley worked in some solid body-head combos and changed levels throughout. Mac landed bigger, more frequent shots and this lead to him securing a decision win. Riley took his first loss despite a punch of his knocking off Mac’s head guard just before the final bell.

The final K1 rules match of the night took place in the professional ranks. Gerra Gossen and Peter Arbeau went at it to the delight of the Calgary crowd. Peter’s steady body work was causing a lot of noticeable redness on Gerra’s body early on. Peter was getting a good rhythm going with a variety of level changing kicks and was able to put hands on Gerra when he came too close. The decision win for Peter was academic. K1 rules were tossed out the window and the Boxing portion of the card began at that juncture.

Eloisa Martinez and Stephanie Essensa both brought it. Steph kept working solid one-twos throughout with Eloisa finding success when committing to bigger flurries. Eloisa worked the body well in the final frame but Steph seemed to have a higher rate of connectivity. The bout was so competitive that the back and forth affair was ruled a majority draw. The big boys locked horns afterwards as things moved over to the Heavyweight division.

Justin Schmit and Brad Wilson stepped into the ring with Justin putting up a torrid pace. Brad was never able to establish a rhythm. Schmit cut Wilson and caused redness on several areas of his face along with the blood dripping down. Justin’s footwork, constant forward motion, and steady leather slinging proved too much for Wilson. The referee halted the action at 1:59 of the third frame, Justin was declared the winner, and he also made a call out to set up an opponent for Dekada’s next card in September.

Gwyn Lewis and Wayne Smith then entered the ring for the sixth bout of the evening. Highly touted local prospect Gwyn was able to put together multi punch combos well, listened to his corner for “on the fly” adjustments, and boxed intelligently en-route to a decision win. Gwyn was happy with  getting the experience of going six rounds and feels like this boxing IQ will grow tremendously going forward. Despite talks of a future tittle shot being on the table, Gwyn remained humble in his stance. Lewis is just looking to get better and continue to grow at Bowmont Boxing Club following his third professional win. This segued smoothly into the co-main event prize fight.

Erika Hernandez and highly touted Kandi Wyatt put on a great display of the sweet science in the next bout of the evening. Kandi was aggressive, worked in a lot of close quarters shots, and had a hard prying jab. Erika maintained some defensive savviness throughout, would slip in her own punches when given the chance, but the output clearly favoured Kandi. Kandi Wyatt notched a decision win and the excited crowd readied themselves for the main event fight.

Grey Eagle security guard Devin Reti scored his tenth professional win over a warrior in Fernando Valencia. Devin worked behind a thudding jab, used savvy footwork, and boxed a smart game plan for the bulk of the contest. Fernando certainly had his moments though with both pugilists landing their fair share of sweat flinging punches. Heavy leather was swung especially in the final frame with Devin indulging the Mexican warrior’s desire to bang it out. The crowd erupted during this flurry and it capped off a bout that they were electric for from bell to bell. Devin was swarmed by fans after the top of the marquee prize fight and everybody went home happy.

Dekada Fight Night returns to action in September and Liberty Multimedia looks to be there as well. The Western Canada promotion delivered big yet again and LMM’s Dylan Bowker was happy to behold some rising stars in action from the Calgary combat sports scene.
